What is it?
Big Fish is a supplier of premium frozen Atlantic salmon. As well as their plain organic salmon fillets they also sell salmon with a wide range of marinades.
What did it taste like?
We tried salmon with the BBQ sauce, sweet chilli, garden mint and Eastern Thai marinades, as well as the plain organic salmon (which I marinated in some homemade teriyaki sauce). I’ll admit that I was a little unsure about some of the flavours before I tried them – do salmon and mint really go? Well actually yes they do, and it’s definitely a combination I’m keen to sample again. In fact we enjoyed all of the flavours we were sent.
According to the packs the salmon can be microwaved, baked or poached (all from frozen), and in the interests of testing them out to the max I tried all three. They all worked well, with little to distinguish between them and personally I found microwaving the easiest and most convenient – it’s ready in just 4 minutes which is perfect for a quick dinner.
One thing I would say is that some of the fillets could have been a little prettier. Some were cut a little wonky and for an evening meal with Jon this isn’t a problem, I don’t really care what my dinner looks like as long as it tastes good and I’m guessing that cutting them this way means less waste which is great. However, if I was having people over for dinner that I wanted to impress then I might want something a little neater.

How much does it cost?
A pack of 2 marinated fillets costs £5.39 and you can get 4 fillets for the slightly cheaper price of £9.59, which is a little more expensive that I could find for similar products in the supermarket. The plain organic fillets are £6.40 for 2 or £12.49 for 4 which is on a par with the prices I’ve seen for similar products in the supermarket.
Where do you get it from?
Delivery from their website is free but you have to spend over £40 (it’s a shame there’s no option I could find to pay for delivery below this amount). As the salmon is frozen it’s packaged in dry ice to keep it fresh in transit. This means you really need to be home when the delivery arrives (or very soon after). The good news is that it’s next day delivery (if you order before 11am) so at least you have a good idea of when it’ll turn up and can choose to have it delivered on a day when you’re going to be at home but it’s not great if you’re out at work all week as they only deliver on weekdays (I guess you’ll need a friendly neighbour with some extra freezer space to keep it cold until you get home).
We really enjoyed the Big Fish Salmon and I’d definitely have it again. I think it’s perfect for a mid week dinner when you need something yummy and healthy in a bit of a hurry. It’s a shame that the minimum order is £40 but you can always look out for a local stockist to try a packet or two and see what you think.
