How to Make a Mickey Mouse Pancake

Shrove Tuesday is just around the corner and I’ve been busy sharing my favourite pancake recipes (including my Traditional Pancake Day Pancakes and my Lemon and Raisin Pancakes). However, there’s one fundamental problem with all of these pancakes… They’re all just round, how dull is that?

So I decided that it was about time I got my icing bottles out again and had a go at making my pancakes look a bit more interesting.

The subject of todays efforts… Mickey Mouse

And who better to enjoy a Mickey Mouse pancake then the man himself…

Guess what Mickey Mouse eats for breakfast? Mickey mouse pancakes of course!

And lets be honest, he’s probably going to want to share breakfast with his best friend. Unfortunately Donald looks a little unimpressed that he’s eating a Mickey pancake but Donald’s harder to draw!

OK, That’s enough of my getting carried away with my camera. Time to tell you a little bit about what I did.

Before you say it, I know the artwork is a little basic, I’m no Van Gogh. However, hopefully what I’m showing you is that anyone can have a go regardless of artistic talents and still end up with something recognisable.

I would recommend having a go at your drawing on a piece of paper first. I find that having a few practice goes with pen and paper means that it’s more likely to turn out OK in the pan when you have to work quickly.

Anyone that’s been reading my blog for a while will have seen my New Year’s Pancake which also included an American pancake recipe that’s perfect for pancake art and a step-by-step tutorial to adding writing to a pancake.

I’ve used exactly the same recipe and method here. If you want lots of detail then I suggest you take a look at the post. However here’s a quick recap..

  1. Make your pancake batter
  2. Heat a large frying pan until it’s very hot.
  3. Turn off the heat and draw the outline of your pancake.
  4. Turn the heat back on high and heat until you can see that the bottom of the pancake has turned dark brown (don’t lift it, just look at the colour of the edges)
  5. Turn the heat off and add the fill.
  6. Turn the heat back on low and cook until the pancake starts to bubble.
  7. Flip and cook for a little longer until the pancake is cooked.

I’ve also made a little video just to show you how I drew the shape.
